Bicycling Australia Show - pics & short report
Hope you all enjoyed the Bicycling Australia Show, I’ve put up some pix on the YarraBUG flickr gallery. It was great to meet lots of Victorian BUG people, share ideas & network stuff, hopefully we can do something similar to another shared Victoria BUG display again. (in 2008 with an actual marquee?)

Moreland and Yarra BUGs need your help!
This is a response to Anna’s email to the MorelandBUG group regarding Moreland Councils recent decision on Video Ezy. Doubtless many of you would of also read the Melbourne Times article this week about this issue.

Regarding the Video Ezy site on the Nicholson Street crossing, YarraBUG did make a point or two about the area in our November 2004 submission to the Linear Park plan, refer to page three. YarraBUG are far from pleased that Moreland council has acted against both City of Yarra & YarraBUG’s recommendations, and that this decision will impinge upon ALL path users.

2006 BV Board Election - One week to go
It’s one week to go in the Bicycle Victoria Board elections, please read below for three candidate statements who also are active members of their respective BUG’s. If you’re a BV member, please ensure that you vote by 5pm Oct 27 and also feel free to pass on this email to your fellow cyclists. Read more about the 2006 Bicycle Victoria Board Election and other candidates who are standing.

Ruth Paterson: I am running for the board of Bicycle Victoria. I value BV’s achievements in promoting bike riding through events such as Ride to Work Day and Around the Bay, and in working with councils and government to develop bike lanes and paths.

Bicycle Victoria can increase its impact through greater collaboration with bicycle user groups and other organisations that promote bike riding as enjoyable, affordable and sustainable transport and recreation. I am well qualified for board membership with experience in government, international development projects, local organisations and a masters degree in governance and development.

From 9-27 October, Bicycle Victoria members will be able to vote for 4 new board members. Historically, few Bicycle Victoria members have voted. I encourage all members to vote for up to four candidates who reflect their vision for Bicycle Victoria. I hope to work with Bicycle Victoria to get more people riding, more often. Contact me if you would like to help, email: ruthpaterson@ mail.com

Rick Barry: Bicycle Victoria is a great organisation, and I believe we can make it even greater. BV’s strength is in its membership and if I am elected I will work hard to make members’ voices heard for the benefit of us all.

Families: I started cycling as a child, and now ride with my children (our family was profiled in the family issue of Ride On). I regularly ride to school with my children and am involved in a ‘riding school bus’ to get more kids cycling more often. If elected, I will make family issues a priority for Bicycle Victoria.

Cyclists: Bicycle Victoria is a very diverse group, but we are all cyclists. Many members lead different lives to mine and ride bikes for different reasons, but we all ride. If elected, I will listen to everyone’s needs and provide a voice for everyone in the group.

Community: The promotion of cycling is essential for a healthy community: for healthy bodies, happy neighbourhoods and safer roads. For more than 15 years now, I’ve worked in the community sector (including supporting volunteers – BV’s lifeblood) trying to improve the places where we live. If elected, I will be a strong voice for healthy communities.

Catherine James: Catherine has extensive management experience, and a first hand understanding what motivates people to take up bike riding. ‘I started riding a bike in my early 50’s,’ she says, ‘and it changed my life.’ A regular cycling commuter, she has successfully campaigned for access to bike facilities in the workplace and plays an active role in her local and workplace BUGs. As a relative newcomer to the joys of bike riding she is passionate about promoting cycling and can offer a different perspective to the Bicycle Victoria Board. With an established record in working with boards, Catherine James will add a strong, new voice to Board deliberations. If elected to the Board Catherine will advocate for:

• A Member-centered approach as Bicycle Victoria is a membership-based organisation,
• Improved consultation to continually seek and consider the views of members,
• Greater transparency,
• Expanded cooperation with BUGs & other cycling groups.

Official opening day of the Federation Trail, From Gavin at BrimBUG
Hi Everyone, this Sunday is the official opening day of the Federation Trail. Various people have been struggling off and on for ten years to get to this moment and it’s not just a big boost for cycling in the west, it’s a great new trail for all Melbourne cyclists to enjoy. For those who don’t know the history, the Fed Trail follows the course (more or less) of the old outfall sewer, a 19th century open channel that took more than half of Melbourne’s raw sewage slowly down to the treatment plant at Werribee. That is why there used to be such an awful stink along the freeway - the open sewer was just metres away.

A new underground pipe was built in 1993 and the old red-brick construction has been the home of lillies and frogs ever since. The new trail is 23km of surfaced shared path between Millers Rd, Brooklyn (near Altona Gate Shopping Centre), and Werribee River where it flows under Princes Freeway. (This connects with the shared path up Werribee River that leads all the way to the station.) The trail passes along the back fences of some pretty noxious industrial sites, out into the big western paddocks, crosses Kororoit and Skeleton Creeks next to their red-brick, arched bridges and finishes with a long straight ride down an avenue of cypress.

VicRoads and the DoI are having a bash on Sunday morning, starting at 10am down on the Skeleton Ck easement: road access from Elm Park Drive, Hoppers Crossing; nearest station 2km Hoppers Crossing. There will most likely be a thrilling speech from Peter Batchelor, but even more exciting - I will be leading a BrimBUG ride down the new trail to Werribee River and back, and then on to Brooklyn for those who wish. Everyone is welcome to join us to ride and celebrate the opening of a major new trail.
