Yarra Bicycle Users Group Radio on 3CR

Yarra Bicycle Users Group Radio - 10-10.30am - Every Monday on 3CR Community Radio 855 AM

Monday 15th September is Yarra Bicycle User Group’s very first Radio show and we are broadcasting live, 10 - 10.30am on 3CR Community Radio 855 AM.

A group of six people will be taking it in turns to present the show, the program presenters are Sonya, Chris, Val, Steve, Rob and Emma.

Our program intends to promote urban cycling as a viable means of transport; promote Yarra’s cycling conditions; demystify cycling technology; and help reveal the diversity of cyclists around from children, to commuters, to lobbyists.

We are hoping the YarraBUG Radio will encourage people to join in the sheer fun of bicycle riding and to also raise awareness in sustainable transport issues. YarraBUG will be broadcasting every Monday at 10am 3CR Community Radio 855am and streaming live on the web at 3cr.org.au.

We would like our show to be for everyone – cyclists or not and we would love non-cyclists to be in our audience. YarraBUG Radio is based in the inner suburbs of Abbotsford, Alphington, Burnley, Carlton North, Clifton Hill, Cremorne, Collingwood, Fairfield, Fitzroy, Fitzroy North Princess Hill and Richmond. We want to advocate on behalf of cyclists for improved cycling conditions with organisations and many other groups.

YarraBUG radio is particularly interested in hearing from cyclists who may not be residents of the Yarra area, but who commute daily through the area. Both cyclists and residents local knowledge, resources and skills are important in creating awareness and a safe cycling environment in the inner north.

For those of you who haven’t hear of a BUG before, it stands for Bicycle User Group, which is a community based organisation set up by cyclists. There are a number of different sort of BUGS, such as those defined by a geographical area or workplace or place of education such as universities or TAFE’s. The role of BUGs can be to provide a forum for cyclists to meet and discuss local bicycle issues, work with local government to improve cycling conditions, promote all types of cycling, assist others to start cycling and arrange and participate in social rides.

YarraBUG would like to thank the City of Yarra for the assistance given via their Community Grants Program to fund our show. We would also like to warmly thank 3CR Community Radio for their strong support to get the show on air and 3CR’s hardworking staff, especially Leanne, Bree, Libby, Juliet, Eleanor and Nicole.

Your feedback is welcome, so call us at 3CR on 03 9419 8377 when you can et us know your thoughts, we welcome your contribution, after all YarraBUG is here for you to help you make your cycling safe, fun and infectious for others.

Merri Creek: Shared Trail improvements

News from City of Yarra Open Space:

From around September 1st to 30th the City of Yarra will be carrying out works to improve the shared trail between the footbridge over the creek at Rushall Station, and the East side of the High Street overpass. The works will realign the shared trail and increase the width to 3 metres, as suggested in the Merri Creek Shared Trail Review recently conducted.

In particular, it will reduce the steep grades just after the footbridge heading East, and just before going under High street bridge. This will improve safety for all users, and provide a suitable sized path for future users. The area under the bridge will be slightly raised and graded to drain to eliminate the ponding that has occurred here. The existing path will be removed and revegetated.

The works have been timed to coincide with the Clifton Rail Duplication Works, so that disruption to cycle and pedestrian traffic will be only slightly greater than is in place with current diversions. There will be times during the works when there is no access to this stretch of track. At these times alternative routes will be shown.

I have enclosed an image to give a broad idea of where these works are taking place. We will be working closely with the contractor to minimise disturbance to vegetation outside the proposed path area, and to revegetate where necessary.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further queries.

Merri Creek Trail Temporary Diversions

Received this information from John Holland regarding work on the Clifton Hill Rail Project, as there will be closures on the Merri Creek Trail between Northcote & Clifton Hill from early August 2008 to early 2009.

Please forward this information onto anyone you know who uses the Merri Creek Trail in this area - see maps + details below.

Read the full text from the Q & A below:

Clifton Hill Rail Project: Merri Creek Trail Diversions - Questions and Answers

Where will the trail be closed?
The Merri Creek Trail will be closed to cyclists between Ross Street and Rushall Station. Pedestrian access will be available between Rushall Station and High Street only.

Where are the alternate routes?
Cyclists and pedestrians are advised to detour via Ramsden or Westgarth Streets.

When will the closure take place?
The affected section of the trail will be closed from early August 2008.

When will the trail be reopened?
It is anticipated that the affected section of the trail will be reopened for use in early 2009.

Why are the diversions needed?
The closure of this section of the Merri Creek Trail is required for works to take place on the Clifton Hill Rail Project. A new rail bridge will be constructed across the Merri Creek (and Merri Creek Trail). The trail needs to be diverted to remove the public interface with the project works and ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and the workforce.

Why were these detour routes selected?
The recommended diversion routes have been devised to:

  • Minimise the inconvenience caused to pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the area;
  • Identify wherever possible direct routes that avoid significant gradients, road crossings or complex changes in route direction;
  • Minimise the need to alter the main bypass routes for the duration of the project; and
  • Make use of the existing local and district road and path network, and designated bike lanes.

Which route is best for me?

Northern Route:
The northern route encourages pedestrians and cyclists to stay on Westgarth Street for as long as possible, utilising existing traffic signals at High Street and minimising traffic in local streets. This route should suit people travelling east-west through the area (such as commuter cyclists skirting the southern edge of Northcote Hill). It also provides a reasonably direct connection between Rushall Station and Ross Street for cyclists travelling along the Merri Creek.

Southern Route:
The southern route follows the existing on road bike lanes in Ramsden Street/North Terrace, crosses Hoddle Street and Queens Parade at existing traffic lights, continues along the bike lane in Michael Street and then Falconer Street to rejoin the Merri Creek Trail at Rushall Station. The southern bypass route avoids heavily trafficked sections of Queens Parade and Hoddle Street. The local roads that make up the route already provide on road connections between the residential neighbourhoods of Clifton Hill and North Fitzroy. The on road paths also act as a feeder route to Merri Creek at Rushall Station, and to the Main Yarra Trail near the eastern end of Ramsden Street/Field Street.

Why canʼt cyclists access the trail between Rushall Station and High Street?
The section of trail between Rushall Station and High Street will be closed to cyclists as there is no ramp available at the High Street end.

What is the Clifton Hill Rail Project?
Currently, the single track bridge between Clifton Hill and Westgarth railway stations causes a bottleneck in the rail network, particularly during peak periods, causing delays to rail services. The duplication of the rail infrastructure, including construction of a new rail bridge over Merri Creek will ensure greater efficiency and reliability in train services on the Epping and Hurstbridge
lines.

As part of the overall project, John Hollandʼs works will include the:

  • Construction of a new rail bridge over Merri Creek;
  • Duplication of 750 metres of rail infrastructure;
  • Upgrade of four passive pedestrian crossings; and
  • Hard landscaping works.

Who is John Holland?
The John Holland Group has been contracted by the Victorian Government to deliver the main works package for the Clifton Hill Rail Project. John Holland is one of Australiaʼs leading engineering and construction companies, with experience in delivering diverse, multi-disciplined projects.

Where can I get more information on the detour or construction of the Clifton Hill Rail Project?
More information can be obtained by contacting the John Holland – Clifton Hill Rail Project Team on 9934 5308 or via info.cliftonhillATjhg.com.au

A project website will be live in August and can be found at www.cliftonhillrailproject.com.au

Capital City Trail - new alignment Nicholson St (ex - Video Ezy site)
Message from Nicholas Elliot, Moreland Council Transport Projects Officer, regarding a particular section of the Capital City trail much beloved by inner suburbs cyclists who use it:

Path alignment proposed - note galvanised fence on west approach to Nicholson so cyclists can use as a handrail while they wait for lights and to promote separation of path and other uses. Also note that the existing concrete pad will have to be excavated where the bike path crosses it to account for level differences.

Cyclists exiting road crossing on west side can cycle off the path, using triangular shaped corner of existing pad, which will be
re-constructed in concrete and not landscaped as symbol indicates. This and the extended handrail/fence should help with crowding in peak hours.

This alignment will be on the agenda for next Moreland BUG meeting. Council has decided to move ahead with construction rather than wait for the new leasee to move in and do it. Any comments back to me via email or at Thursday’s meeting. Email Nicholas Elliot: nelliotATmoreland.vic.gov.au Ph: 9240 1294

Boroondara Council to vote on Darebin Creek - Yarra Trail link 2nd June
From Julia at BoroondaraBUG: On Monday 2nd June, at 8pm, the Urban Planning Special Committee of Boroondara Council will be meeting to decide whether to issue the Planning Permit to Parks Victoria for the long awaited bridge to link the Darebin Creek Path to the Yarra Trail. It is important for Boroondara residents and others who support the link to attend this meeting and to make submissions.

We anticipate that many opponents of the link will be present and making their presence felt, so
we need to demonstrate the amount of support that exists as well. For details on how to go about making a submission and other matters related to council meeting procedures see this Boroondara Council link.

You may like to identify yourself as a cyclist, eg by having a bike helmet under your arm or some such! Another useful thing Boroondara residents can do if you haven’t already done so is to contact your local ward councillor and let him/her know that you support the link and why. Councillors will have received the Planning Department’s Darebin Bridge Report last Friday so can now make a fully informed decision.

This report is also available to the public though I can’t trace it on the web site as yet. If speaking with councillors, please remind them that Yarra and Banyule Councils are comfortable with the ParksVic application and are letting planning staff sign it off. This effectively rules out the ‘Let’s find an alternative route’ position.

Bicycles for Democracy
From Fiona in Sydney: Bicycles for Democracy supports women elected to local and state government in Cambodia primarily aimed at building stronger partnerships between elected women and their constituencies in rural Cambodia. The project is also designed to support worldwide gender equity through local governments, to nourish local democratic processes that recognise social inclusion and citizens rights to participation and to nurture the quality and legitimacy of women’s decision making in that
process.

Since 1992 over 5000 women have received training in the skills needed to run for election and to govern once elected to local or state government in Cambodia. Nanda travels across the country every week mentoring elected women in the sorts of problems they encounter and the decisions needed to resolve them for their local communes.

Many of these women live and work in remote, rural communities and their constituents are spread quite far apart so getting to visit them is often challenging and time consuming. There is a huge need for these bicycles to help increase the participation of women in local government which in turn improves gender equity, decision making for communities and democratic governance through peaceful means. Your one-off donation of $A80.00 will purchase one bicycle for an elected woman in Cambodia and
help make her job representing her community so much easier to do.

YarraBUG March News

YarraBUG Meetings for 2008
YarraBUG River Ride *this* Sunday 16/3
A win! Lygon Court Bicycle Parking
Cyclovia is on again

YarraBUG Meetings for 2008
Our meetings for 2008 will be held at The Queens - Q Cafe, 304 Queens Parade Clifton Hill.

Due to people mentioning they had difficulty attending BUG meetings on a school night (i.e.: weeknights!) we’ve decided to have BUG meetings 2pm on the last Sunday of the month.

Meeting dates for 2008: March 30, April 27, May 25, June 29, July 27, August 31, September 28, October 26, November 30

YarraBUG River Ride this Sunday March 16
8.30am start at Fenix Cafe, Victoria Street, Richmond. Madeleine is helping to organise a YarraBUG ride this Sunday, this is a test ride and hopefully more will be organised shortly. We will be meeting outside Fenix on Victoria Street on the same side as the Ikea shopping centre but towards Kew about 200 metres.

We will meet there at 8.30am for an 8.45am start and set off along the Yarra river towards Burnley crossing over to Studley Park along past the Collingwood Childrens Farm, Dights Falls, Yarra Bend golf course.

For those want to stop for coffee after this short half hour ride can do so at Studley Park Boatshed and for those who want a little longer, there is another 30 minutes that we can add in by crossing over at Fairfield Boatshed and riding along the Yarra Boulevard - and then we will go for coffee at the Studley Park Boatshed and meet any others that wanted the shorter ride.

Therefore it will be half an hour to the Studley Park Boat Shed - another half an hour round trip for those who want the extra ride, half an hour for coffee and then it is half an hour back to Fenix - so all up approximately 2 hours - and back at Fenix by 11am.

It is flat most of the way but you need to be able to carry your bike down a set of stairs - so not a beginner and probably not a fully lycra clad cleats racing bike either - this will be a leisurley pace more for the ‘coffee riding set’. Please contact Madeleine for more information: 0425 796 345.

Lygon Court Bicycle Parking Campaign
Melbourne Council voted last week to support the addition of bicycle parking at Lygon Court! Many thanks to everyone who supported this longrunning campaign, read the YarraBUG letter of support and response from Cr Catherine Ng on our Campaigns page and more background at Melbourne Cyclist

Bin the Bike Ban

Bin the Bike Ban

Announcing … Bin the Bike Ban campaign on the V/Line and Connex changes to taking bicycles on peak hour services. This site collates information and public discussion about the recent bicycle ban.

Also please feel free to subscribe to the public transport discussion group.

Keep in mind, as Alan Parker mentions here, this ‘ban’ is yet another example of a systematic long-term problem that certain groups have been passing the buck on for literally decades.

Hence, why anyone who opposes this ban needs to carefully consider short-term, medium-term and long term strategies to counter it.

A vital point: Please be patient, as it will be difficult to draw together everyone’s ideas and suggestions, so the Bin the Bike Ban site and public transport email group will probably be like a clearing house until we collectively decide what directions, strategies or time lines people want to take.

Any good community-based campaign is a ensemble effort. If you have particular interest, idea or knowledge please consider what your contribution could be. Please pass this message onto anyone you know who could be affected by these bans.
