Saving Melbourne’s cycling history: talking about Maurice Kirby Velodrome<\/a>: on this weeks program Chris interviews Kim Nguyen, a resident in Melbourne’s south-east about discovering a Noble Park velodrome with a big history.<\/p>\n

Kim talks about discovering a hidden cycling gem,\u00a0the historic\u00a0Maurice Kirby velodrome,<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year, only to find out\u00a0literally by chance<\/a>, that the entire area is\u00a0slated for\u00a0demolition by City of Greater Dandenong<\/a>.\u00a0This is the only velodrome remaining in the region and the council have no plans to resurface, rebuild or replace the historic venue.<\/p>\n

We talk about who was Maurice Kirby, his Nobel Park bicycle shop, Pedal Clubs of Victoria, his long career as a sports broadcaster on 3XY and Channel Nine, velodrome construction in 1954-1955 and it’s\u00a0gradual disappearance from local wayfinding.<\/p>\n

Kim discusses how people can get involved with\u00a0his campaign to save the Maurice Kirby velodrome<\/a>, including contacting him about any stories about learning to ride or using the velodrome to train and also\u00a0sending questions to the Greater Dandenong Council<\/a>\u00a0to ask at\u00a0their general meetings<\/a>.<\/p>\n
