Petition feedback: Abbotsford, Clifton Hill, Fitzroy + Fitzroy North

Our petition “Don’t risk our safety in 2025 – tell Yarra Council not to remove safe cycling lanes” has received over 1000 responses!
We asked people to answer to add their connection to Yarra (e.g: do you live, work, study, shop, go out, and/or commute in or through the Yarra area).
This is what people from Abbotsford, Clifton Hill, Fitzroy + Fitzroy North said.
- Richmond, Collingwood and Carlton + Carlton North
- Melbourne CBD, Parkville, Brunswick + Brunswick East
- Hawthorn, Kew and inner east suburbs
- I commute along Elizabeth street 3+ times a week and find it a safe place to ride with my daughter on the back. Very few other safe options!
- Don’t own a car, ride my bike everywhere. We should be building more bike lanes not less, so more people feel safe enough to ride!
- Live in Yarra. Ride my bike through Richmond weekly.
- I commute via bike every day, from Abbotsford to Port Melbourne. Riding on roads is dangerous, i have had several close calls already this year, and I’ve observed other cyclists have close calls too.
- dedicated bike lanes make such a big difference. if they didn’t exist on my commute route I’d be back to driving my car and contributing to gridlock.
- I live and work in Yarra
- I have been hit by a car before and was lucky to recover from it. Bike lanes save lives; removing them means putting lives at risk.
- I live, work and ride in Yarra, using the bike lanes to commute into the City as well. My kids also use the bike lanes as a safe way to get to and from school and work. It really would be a backwards move to remove safe cycling lanes
- I live, shop, go out in and commute through the yarra area.
- Live in Yarra and commute down Elizabeth St each day
- I live, work, shop and go out in the Yarra area. Protected bike lines are wonderful
- I commute from abbotsford to work, and to university, riding my bike everyday. I have already had far too many close calls with trams, and cars and I feel like my safety is endangered.
- We are all Yarra – live, work, play and study. The Elizabeth St bike track is an imporant link for us to both City of Melbourne, and back into Richmond. My children use it to access Richmond High School and basketball. My partner uses it to use Richmond Leisure centre and eat out on Bridge Road. I also use it to connect to the CBD.
- The work done on Elizabeth St is a source of pride, since it is far superior to the bike lane on Albert St in East Melbourne! Don’t degrade this important infrastrucutre. Look to the future by having a far advanced permanent solution.
- Bear in mind, an important feature of the east-bound bike lane is the visibility. Without today’s modern oversized vehicles in the way, it improves safetly vastly. To re-institute parking is agains council’s forward looking policies on safety, climate change and a more equitable uses of valuable public space.
- Resident
- I live on Gipps St and me and my partner regularly cycle with our toddler on the bike, so bicycle safety is incredibly important to our household. I cycle down Church St/Chapel St into Stonnington for work and I always feel so much safer in the City of Yarra area, so I don’t want our area to go backwards in cycling safety initiatives and infrastructure.
- thankyou for helping make a liveable city for all.
- I ride my bike every day. Including to pick up my 3 yr old daughter . Bike lanes are important.
- More bikes. Keep cyclists safe!!!!!
- Live and commute
- Live, shop, go out and commute here
- I cycle to work in Cremorne. Safe bike lanes are a must as they give you time to react to cars and people who don’t see you.
- A bicycle is the best way for residents like me to get around the streets of Yarra. And it is the launchpad to many of Melbourne’s best trails too.
- Live and commute to Cremorne on bike
- Live in Yarra, Ride to work in Yarra
- I live and work in Yarra with my family, and our child attends school here. We all use cycling as one of our main forms of transport- it is not only healthy and enjoyable but, due to the traffic chaos in Melbourne (especially Hoddle St), is often the only practical way to get around. We all need to be focusing on the climate emergency- Yarra Council should be fostering safe bike lanes and creating more, rather than considering their removal. We recently moved back to nasty/Melbourne after 15 years in London where we watched initial scepticism about the introduction of bike lanes become support as the improved bike infrastructure transformed neighbourhoods and massively increased cycling. Yarra Council should be looking to do the same .
- I live, work, shop, go out, and commute in the Yarra area and I rely on the protected bike lanes. I’ve seen so many near misses with cars in unprotected bike lanes.
- I live, shop, walk and enjoy the parks in the Yarra Area, Richmond, Abbotsford, Collingwood, Fitzroy, East Melbourne, Burnley, Carlton, Cremorne, Jollimont, Victoria Park, Clifton Hill and the streets and areas in-between and along the river.
- I do not understand removing safety and protective areas for users.
- Safety and safer streets should be the 1st priority for those who are not in a vehicle, nor should money be wasted by removing what has or is in place at present.
- Live, work, shop, go out, recreate in Yarra
- I live and work in the city of Yarra and use my bike frequently. I don’t own a car and riding my bike is my primary mode of transport. I’m very concerned about the potential removal of safe bicycle lanes.
- The Council should also consider its own liability if cyclists are injured after they remove safe cycle lanes
- I lived here. My whole life. I need safe bike lanes. Not more parking. Get real
- I commute and use my bike to go short distances of less than 20km. I consider the bike lanes as a must have from safety and promotion of healthy lifestyle.
- Live, commute, cycle, walk, drive, grocery shop, go out in Yarra.
- Live in Yarra and ride/commute within and through Yarra
- Live, commute to work, shop, explore for recreation in Yarra.
- I ride through Yarra and live in Fitzroy North
- Live in the Yarra area.

- Live in Yarra. Use these bike lanes weekly.
- I use the bike path every day to commute to work and most weekends when I go riding with my friends. As a local to Melbourne, I rely on these paths for safe and convenient travel. The protected bike lanes make a huge difference in my safety and confidence when cycling, and I strongly believe they should be retained and improved, not removed
- I live and work in Yarra. My partner commutes by bike everyday through Yarra Council.
- I live and commute through Yarra. Watch the cyclists ride past makes me feel safer. The less cars, the better.
- I live in Abbotsford and cycle regularly to and from the CBD and around Abbotsford, Richmond and Collingwood.

- Work and live and want to have a neighbourhood where safe walking and biking is possible. Its the reason I moved here
- I live in city of Yarra.
- I am a regular cyclist, relieving vehicle pressure on the increasingly choked roads.
- I’m 70 years old and safety when cycling is of great importance to me.
- I also walk through my neighbourhood and open space, visual amenity and shade is very important. More trees, more parkland, and a truly functional holistic transport system please.
- Live!
- I have been living and l have been through primary school and now entering high school in the Yarra areas. We have always preferred riding over polluting and clogging the roads with yet another car. The lanes make it safer to share the road, especially for us kids.
- Have lived and do alot of my work in the Yarra areas. My daughter also has been through primary school and now entering high school in these same areas. We have always preferred riding over polluting and clogging the roads with yet another car. The lanes make it safer to share the road, especially for the kids.

We have always preferred riding over polluting and clogging the roads with yet another car. The lanes make it safer to share the road, especially for the kids.
- I live, work, walk and ride in Yarra
- I ride my bike everyday for either work or fitness and also drive a car on a regular basis.
- As a community the City of Yarra should continue to take a leadership position and make cycling as safe as possible because right now it very risky & very dangerous to navigate your way around City of Yarra on a bike.
- To hear the City of Yarra is considering removing cycling infrastructure & safely measure is beyond belief, immature and shortsighted.
- Clearly individuals proposing removing & reducing cycling safely measures are sitting excessively behind their desks or sitting in their cars (most likely SUV or dual cab 4WDS) bitter and twisted about the world & traffic congestion which they create but will never acknowledge!
- Please City of Yarra, stick with the program & the strategy and stop trying to be all things to all people and fall into trap of poor decision making by oiling the squeaky wheel !!
- I’ve lived here for 36 years. I am a driver and a pedestrian. Removal of bike lanes would be a backward step.
- Live here, shop, go out and commute in
- I live, go out and commute in the Yarra area
- I live and work in the Yarra area and i commute using my bike, if safe bike lanes are removed I have to risk my life every time I go to work
- I am a leisure cyclist who loves these lanes and trails
- I live in Yarra and cycle to work in the city much more frequently via the Elizabeth street separated bike line since it’s introduced. Great initiative
- I live and work in Yarra. Our kids ride to school.
- I live in the area
- I live in the the Yarra City area and just love the bike paths. I was reluctant to ride in the Prahran area due to safety concerns but since moving to Abbotsford, we regularly take our bikes out. Yarra City should be very proud of what they have achieved in making this area one of the most bike friendly regions in Australia.
- Live, shop, go out and cycle throughout the Yarra area
- I live, walk & ride in the city of Yarra & condemn any moves to remove bike lane infrastructure
- I have commuted to work using Elizabeth Street and have recently retired and use both Elizabeth Street to visit the CBD and Coppin Street to visit friends using my ebike.
- Please don’t remove them!!!
- Live
- I live, work, shop and go out in Yarra. Safe cycling is essential to my way of life.
- Live in and ride through Yarra to get the work.
- Resident and pedestrian.
- Live & work in Yarra trying to live a car free life
- I live in Yarra with my family, my kids 10,12 use the cycling lanes to get to school, after school sports and we use them for all short trips around the area. If you start removing bike lanes it means we will need to start driving. Lead the way in moving forward with sustainable transport otherwise this would be as stupid as a Trump promise.
- By the way, I actually work for an auto company but support cycling for transportation.
- I live, work, study, shop & dine in Yarra – & always on my bike
- I ride every day of the week to the medical precinct in Parkville
- My children ride to school
- We never drive
- So this is how we commute every day as a family of 4
- Live work shop go out
- Live & commute here & oppose these changes.
- I live in and commute and rise a bicycle within the City of Yarra.
- I live, commute, and work in the Yarra. Even with designated cycling lanes, it is very scary. Why in the world would you make things MORE dangerous for cyclists. Absurd
- Live
- Live
- I chose to live in Yarra City Council specifically because I wanted to commute by bike rather than by car. We use our bikes to take our kids to daycare, swimming lessons or the zoo safely. I want them to grow up with the freedom of movement and good health that it has provided my husband and I. We are members of the birrarung cycling club, which provides social connection and a sense of community. This infrastructure is a vital part of our lives. Additionally, the waste of time, resources and money involved in providing public infrastructure and then ripping it out again for what? parking revenue? appeasing a vocal minority that hates cyclists? Is unconscionable. These safe bike lanes are incredibly important to me, my family and our local community.
- I live in Abbotsford, with two kids at school in Abbotsford. We use Elizabeth St to cycle kids to tennis multiple times per week. I also cycle to work in Cremorne multiple times per week. Bike lanes are essential.
- Live here!
- Live, shop and go out through Yarra area, and I especially bike around
- I cycle many times a week, through City of Yarra and Melbourne. Cycling is my preferred mode of transport for work, shopping and pleasure. I choose routes with bike paths for safety
- I live and work/run a business in Abbotsford. I walk ans my primary mode of transportation and support safe and beautiful pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
- I love in the area.
- I live, work, shop, go out, commute in Yarra. I don’t own a car and cycle everywhere
- I live, shop, go out and commute in the Yarra area.
- I live in Yarra and cycling is my main form of transport for me and the little one. I don’t have a car and would not appreciate taking away the safety of the separated bike lanes. Car drivers are not always that careful!
- I live, work, bike spend money and pay rates in Yarra. I have the immense privilege not to own a car. My wife, son and I are able to bike or walk anywhere. Yarra should be a beacon of active transport, somewhere where we can have the 15 minute city we all deserve.
- Live in Abbotsford and believe cycling is the future for Abbotsford
- Live in Yarra
- Live work commute and rec ride thru Yarra
- Live in
- I live and spend a lot of time cycling through the area to shop, play, live etc. I also commute on a bike and drop my child (via bike) off at a local daycare centre 4 days per week. Removing dedicated bike lanes – even temporary ones as they are now – makes the road less safe for me and my child who use the bike lanes on a near daily basis. As a Yarra resident I strongly oppose the scaling back of bike friendly initiatives as are currently proposed.
- Cycle daily in Yarra. Have lived and worked here for 10+ years.
- I ride through the Yarra streets everyday to get to work, do my shopping, and meet friends. The streets which have protected bike lanes feel significantly safer than those without. I also have many friends who do not ride due to feeling unsafe from cars; therefore, the safer we make the streets for other modes of transport, the less cars on the road, and the safer and better the streets are for EVERYONE!
- Live and commute
- I live in Yarra and travel around the neighbourhood by bike
- I make frequent use of the Elizabeth St cycle lane when cycling as well as many surrounding Streets. I use Coppin St as a short cut to the Yarra trail to visit my daughter in Port Melbourne. I’m an old (79) woman using an e-bike and like driving through the city.
- I live in Yarra and ride around the City of Yarra regularly to shop, socialise and attend appointments.
- I use my bike(s) for all possible trips, ie some 95% of them, often in tandem with taking it on the train.
- Yarra (and even before the amalgamation) has had a history of being a leader in bike thinking and usage. It would say heaps about Council if any bike facilities were down-played or removed.
- I live in the area and commute on bike – streets have had speeds reduced to 30 to help Yarra be a more liveable suburb but now you’re removing bike lanes? Makes no sense – and is obviously an anti-resident decision
- I live, work, shop, go out, commute, and recreate through and in Yarra
- Live, shop, go out, commute in Yarra.
- Live in Abbotsford and use bike everyday for work and family.
- I live, work, study and shop in Abbotsford, and I ride to all of them
- I live in Yarra and I cycle extensively and frequently throughout Yarra.
- I live in Yarra
- I live, work, shop, go out and commune regularly through Yarra and love the bike lanes and the safety they provide.
- I am a regular and committed bike user and I deeply appreciate the infrastructure that supports cycling across our council area. It would be a great loss to see that downgraded or reduced in any way. I would prefer to see further investment in getting people out of their cars by supporting more safe cycling options.
- Resident ratepayer and voter, commuter through Yarra area.
- I live in the city of Yarra and one of the reasons for doing so is the cycling infrastructure both fixed and pop up. Removal of the pop up lanes will make cycling less safe.
- I use our excellent cycle infrastructure every single day to cycle to work in East Melbourne (down Nicholson and along Elizabeth), to accompany my daughter to school, to visit the recreational facilities in Richmond down Church and Highett, and to visit friends across Abbotsford, Collingwood and Clifton Hill and to go out to the many retail and recreational venues in our area, without depending on a car.
- As someone who has been hospitalised after being knocked off a bike where there were no bike lanes, I only feel safe riding in bike lanes. The excellent bike infrastructure enables us to not only ride safely but to therefore only maintain one car, an important step in doing our bit to reduce carbon emissions.
- I am appalled that with all the evidence about the importance of exercise, kids riding to school, reducing traffic that a relatively new set of councillors would be so arrogant as to consider they had some mandate to rip up excellent infrastructure without full and robust consultation with ALL residents.
- I live in Yarra, and my family and I rely heavily on the safety cycling infrastructure provides. There is no justification or logic in removing these lanes. There is a need to protect your electors.
- I live in Yarra. I commute by bicycle often between North Fitzroy and Hawthorn. I shop, go out and play in Yarra, often on my bike.
- We commute to and from Yarra by bicycle to our house renovation project n Fitzroy Nth.
- Live in Yarra and ride bike
- I live in Yarra and work in the CBD, I cycle into work everyday mon-fri and bike around everywhere else meeting friends and popping to the shops. Protected bike lanes make cycling round the city pleasant, fast and safe!!
- Live, commite

- Casual bike rider who believes bike riding should be encouraged with safe traffic infrastructure

- Live here, cycle almost every day to work, shop, and for fun.
- Live and commute
- I live, shop, visit friends, go out and ride in Yarra
- Work in Richmond and commute from Fitzroy North multiple days a week
- Riding all around the city of Melbourne and bike lanes are very important making cycling safer and more accessible
- Live, commute, shop, go out in/through Yarra area. I don’t own a car and I would love to keep it that way. Sage bike lanes are a must for a car-free lifestyle.
- If you want cleaner air, less CO2, fewer dead people, healthier life styles, less cost for health care systems, more efficient transport, less microplastic from tires in your water ways, and a more quiet –> stress free city, then you must support bike lanes!
- Live in Yarra and commute daily on bicycle through Yarra to the CBD using bike lanes in addition to my children commuting to and from kinder and school on bicycle using bike lanes within Yarra.
- I live and work in Yarra and ride to work every day
- I live very close to the Yarra – visit it frequently for leisure and to commute to work. I have many friends who live here so I am always here.
- Live, shop, commute
- Live in Yarra
- I live in the City of Yarra and cycling is my main form of transport. Yarra needs more safe cycling infrastructure. Council must not remove any existing cycling infrastructure.
- I live in Yarra and commute to the city by bike, as well as shopping, and general transport in Yarra and surrounding areas.
- Today I was nearly hit by a car in Scotchmer St as the driver was going too fast and failed to give way at a roundabout. Cyclists are always just a driver-mistake away from being injured or killed. Separated bike lanes are crucial for cyclist’ safety.
- Dear Councillors,
- I live in Yarra and work in the CBD, I don’t own a car, and I almost exclusively ride to work and other destinations. Every time I ride, I do so with pride in the fantastic infrastructure developed by my local council. The cycle lanes throughout the Yarra area change cycling from a fun but nail-biting adventure, to a relaxing, enjoyable method of commuting.
- Many people i know have been enticed to join the ranks of cycling commuters by separated or clearly marked cycles lanes; the lower speed limits for cars; and the commitment shown by Yarra council to support the needs of people who ride to work. A key part of this support has been actively considering the needs of cycling commuters in road designs, rather than painting a white line as an afterthought. The protected bike lanes in particular give much-needed peace of mind to cycling commuters
- I’m sure that you are all aware of the many benefits to our community of encouraging active transport: a reduction in vehicle traffic, a consequent reduction in degradation on our roads, lower vehicular emissions, and healthier constituents. Anyone who has taken a ride in the morning sun recently will attest to the joy of taking to the road on two wheels; a joy that is only increased by the knowledge that you are in less danger of being hit by a motor vehicle.
- For all of these reasons, I am deeply troubled by the new council’s wavering of support for bicycle infrastructure in the Yarra area. With so many obvious benefits for Yarra residents, why is the council now proposing to remove cycling infrastructure? How many current and future cycling commuters will be impacted by reverting to a less safe, less protected cycleway? How many drivers will benefit from a handful of parking spaces? How many seconds will be shaved off a commute through the area, thanks to this sacrifice of cycling safety?
- I hope that the council will maintain its historic commitment to being the best LGA in Melbourne for active transport by retaining the current network of cycle lanes.
- Resident and bike rider
- I work in Yarra, my kids go to school, childcare and sporting events in Yarra, we shop in Yarra… if council pushes through with its shithouse bike lane removal plan, we will all be poorer for that occurring.
- I live in Yarra and cycle.
- Both live in and work in Yarra, and ride my bike everywhere. To drop off the kids at school, go to the shops, to work, etc. I need bike lanes everyday! They make me feel safe, especially when I’m riding with my two kids on the back of my bike.
- I’m a long time resident of Yarra Council and commute by bike regularly.
- Live in Yarra council and cycle frequently.
- Live in Yarra
- Live and work in the Yarra area
- Live, commute
- We own a bike shop and see many accidents with the inadequate bikes lanes on this section of St Georges Rd. Including cars running red lights through the crossing near our shop.
- I live in Yarra and use the bike infrastructure on a daily basis to commute and get around.
- I live and commute in the City of Yarra. Do not remove our bike lanes.
- I commute on these bike lanes daily, the drivers are always in a hurry and are not very considerate to cyclist. Please leave these pop ups bike lanes in place!
- I shop and work in the Yarra area as well as living in Fitzroy North. These are the best thing to happen to safe riding spaces. I ride with my daughter and it makes us feel cared about and safer when riding. With Ebike use growing and other electric vehicles we need to have spaces that keep us separated from traffic.
- I’ve been cycling to work in the city for approximately 35 years. In that time, I have seen what was a dangerous commute become much safer as a result of bike lanes being built. It is thoroughly disappointing that it is considered politically attractive to do this. Please do not do this. Before bicycle lanes were introduced, every 18 months or two years I would see the aftermath of a bad bicycle accident, with paramedics in attendance and a cyclist lying on the road not moving. A sickening site which I am happy to say I have not seen for many years. Please think carefully about this. You will bear some responsibility for every accident that occurs in a removed bicycle lane.
- I live and work in Yarra. I ride everywhere, and the bike lanes make a huge difference to safety.
- Please do not bow to the feral petrol-head lobby who would happily kill all cyclists just to get their SUVs into the CBD a few minutes faster.
- We want more cycle lanes – safer cycling, more cyclists and fewer cars.
- I live in Yarra. I ride a bicycle to get to local shops and for recreation. I am retired.
- Live in Clifton hill, commute via bike lanes and cycle several times per week on bike lanes throughout Yarra
- I cycle myself and 2 children around Yarra on our electric cargo bike as a means of transport… shopping, socializing, and commuting. We’re also car owners. Safe sufficient biking infrastructure is so important to our family’s safety, and to encourage bicycle use over car use for generations to come. I strongly hope the bike lanes in Richmond maintain a width more than the current proposal.
- I’ve lived in Yarra for close to 30 years and have always used a bike for work, family transport, shopping and going out.
- Live, shop, go out, and commute through.
- Yarra resident and frequent cyclist throughout the municipality for shopping leisure, visiting friends and attending Yarra community events.
- Live in Yarra, commute and travel by bike
- Live in Yarra. I also shop, commute and go out in Yarra too.
- Live and work in Yarra, cycle to both school drop off and work, pool, playdates etc. Want child and human safe streets for walking and cyclists please.
- Live in Yarra, travel across Yarra by bicycle which is my main mode of transport.
- Live, work, commute and shop in Yarra
- I live in Yarra and commute by bike through Yarra every week day to get to and from work.
- I love, work, play and commute in the City of Yarra. I live on a bike and the cycling infrastructure is one of the key reasons I stay in Yarra
- Live, work , shop, ride for leisure daily in city of Yarra.
- Live in City of Yarra – exist within on the daily
- I live and work in Yarra and commute frequently by bike
- I live and ride in Yarra.
- Live in Yarra for more than 30 years and bike riding plus walking is my main transport option in Yarra and surrounding suburbs. In Yarra I feel safe and ride as it’s efficient, no need to park a car, arrive on time to events as avoid traffic congestion and importantly keep fit and lower my transport emissions. Act against protected bike paths as u are suggesting, then u will find stiff opposition from residents who overwhelmingly have supported bike riding as the future of our city. Check out previous surveys on this issue of bike paths. No doubt u all will most likely listen to a minority of angry and loud residents demanding their priority to drive and park cars without consideration of other uses for our roads – mainly bicycle riders and pedestrians.
- I ride extensively across the City of Yarra and need to feel safe. Bike lanes are an essential part of transport infrastructure.
- Thankyou
- I’m a resident of Fitzroy who walks a lot and cycles a bit around Yarra. It seems to me that Yarra has been getting better and better for cyclists over the past few years but is now looking to take a backward step. Why? Cycling is cheap, safe, fun and environmentally friendly – it should be encouraged. Cars are the exact opposite, let’s not encourage them!!!.
- Live, work and socialise in Yarra, and get around via bike everywhere I go. Yarra has been great at making its streets safer for riders and pedestrians – why do we wish to go backwards?
- I ride to work every day.
- I live, work, shop and am raising a child in Yarra. I drive, walk and cycle in the area, and desperately want greater safety for all road users by keeping (and expanding) wider bike lanes and separated road users.
- I live in the area and cycling is my main mode of transport.
- I live and work in Yarra. I also realise the importance of maintaining green transport options to make our city better to live in!
- I live in Public Housing in Fitzroy and cycling is vital for us. Removing lanes is an attack on the poor, as much as it’s an attack on commuters.
- I have lived in Fitzroy for twenty years. I often commute by bicycle to shop locally as well as recreationally at weekends to neighbouring suburbs. I feel safe riding in Yarra. This is also helped by reduced speed limits on surrounding streets. Separated bike lanes are my preferred option!
- Live and work in Yarra.
- Daily bicycle commuter
- I live, work and raise a family in Yarra. All efforts to support and preserve safe cycling and to encourage cycling need to be supported, maintained and expanded. Increasing car flow just increases the number of cars until the congestion returns. Getting cars off the road is a better solution than increasing options for cars. Stay true to your progressive ideologies Yarra council!
- I bike to work every day using the bike lanes. I also bike to all my after work activities such as netball, yoga and climbing. When I go south of the river to see friends, I rely on the bike lanes.
- I live in the city of Yarra and cycling is my main form of transport.
- Live, shop, go out, commute through
- I live in Yarra and commute to the city. I’m terrified of trying to ride in the city. Napier St is the only st I’d feel safe. But I need a route all the way to Spencer St Station. In fact I think we need more lanes, more alternatives, so that riders aren’t on top of each other. They are a large cohort as anyone in the area knows. There isn’t any parkin in Yarra to do shopping etc, scooters and bikes are the only practical alternative unless I take my money out to the suburbs. We’re feeling the crunch financially with the interest rates and can’t afford to have everything delivered. But driving to the shops is off the cards. even going out on the weekends, it’s just too hectic. So we need Bike infrastructure to expand.
- Commute, live and work
- Spend most of my living, work and social life in Yarra
- Live in Fitzroy / Yarra.
- I live, work, shop, go out in the Yarra area. My whole life is here. I don’t own a car, I ride and walk everywhere. Please keep these wonderful lanes (and make more!!) and help us to continue moving forward with a providing a safe and healthy way of life for everyone 🙂
- All of the above! I live in Yarra and shop locally all the time. My kids attend school and childcare in Yarra and we ride our bikes everywhere.
- Live and work in the Yarra area. Cycle around this beautiful area get to work, exercise, social outings.
- This is my community, my home, my safe zone. I live, work and play from Yarra. From home I commute to friends houses and gatherings. I attend different communities where I volunteer and give my time to support multiple community development projects to flourish.

- Live on Rose St
- I live in Fitzroy, work in Collingwood and am a bike rider. It is one of the great things that make Melbourne such a liveable city. And it’s actually one of the benefits that I tell my friends and family back home in New Zealand about why I chose to come to Melbourne five years ago. It would be an embarrassment and a damn right shame to let these bike lanes go. Protect them at all costs. For the now and the future riders
- I use bike lanes to commute and for recreation to reach the parks and to the city. It has been too dangerous to ride without safe bike lanes as currently constructed.
- Live and work in City of Yarra
- Commute, work and live through the Yarra area!
- I live in Yarra City Council.

- I live and work in Yarra and my partner and I have gone down to one car for both cost and sustainability reasons. This means both of us riding a lot more around the area and even though it’s bike friendly, we still get abused by car drivers, have multiple times almost been doored and just generally have cars drive too close to us. Please do not reduce the number of bike lanes. Make Fitzroy and its surrounds one of the best places to get around using healthier and more sustainable transport options.
- I ride and drive all over town.
- But I am firmly of the opinion that to have a good city and good suburbs, we need to allow cars, but firmly prioritise pedestrians and cyclists.
- I live, work and commute in and around Yarra by bike and walking. Particularly down Elizabeth Street Richmond.
- I cycle and walk every day through the area and really appreciate the bike lanes for their practicality and safety. I love that the council has put more of a priority on bikers (and pedestrians) and would really love to see this work continue! Better public transport and other alternatives to cars are always a great move, reducing congestion, noise, pollution and putting an emphasis back on calm, safe, comfortable neighbourhoods.

- Also, trying to reduce carbon footprint by choosing to ride
- shop, go out
- visit friends in the area
- I am using every day the bike lanes by cycling to work and to my daughter’s childcare. Removing them would be putting the whole community at risk.
- Was it Trump’s idea to remove the bike lanes? The future needs more of this infrastructure, not less of it.

- I live in Fitzroy. My family of 5 lived car free and can only do so safely thanks to bike lanes and accomodations for cyclists. We use our bikes to commute to work and school, visit friends, shops and parks.
- I live and work in Yarra and live riding my bike in safety. Please do all you can do reduce car use, increase public transport and make riding bikes even safer, easy, and more enjoyable
- I live in Fitzroy, and frequently travel around the suburb and through many neighbouring suburbs to commute to work, run errands, and for leisure. I mainly do this on a bicycle or walking, with public transport as a secondary option and driving as a last resort. As a user of all of these modes of transportation (including driving), I feel that better infrastructure for walking and cycling leads to safer, more comfortable, and more efficient journeys. Additionally, I believe that a reduction in car traffic saves money on new and ongoing infrastructure expenditure, as well as boosting the revenue of local businesses.
- I live in Yarra and want to be able to continue to bike and walk around our area in safety and comfort. We need fewer cars on the road and more SAFE spaces for cyclists and pedestrians. Please continue the good work of previous councils and increase people’s access to safe walking and cycling zones.
- I have lived in Brunswick but worked in Fitzroy and the CBD over the past 45years . All that time i have been a commuting and recreational cyclist and still am. I have always appreciated the leadership role Yarra Council has taken in showing the way for improvement of bicycle infrastructure and thereby safety for cyclists. I have witnessed the results of this along many bike routes which have progressed from a trickle of cyclists to hundreds of cyclists per hour over this period. Yarra Council, please keep investing in more protected bike lanes and thereby the safety of cyclists in your municipality.
